Polypropylene (PP) Worktops

PP laboratory worktops offer outstanding resistance against strong acids, alkalis, and corrosive chemicals. They are especially suitable for wet chemistry applications and laboratories handling highly aggressive substances.

BESCHREIBUNG

Material Composition and Standards

Our PP worktops are produced from extruded polypropylene sheet conforming to ASTM D4101 and DIN 19970 specifications. We use both homopolymer (PP-H) for higher rigidity and copolymer (PP-C) for improved impact resistance—depending on the intended application. The material is UV‑stabilized to prevent surface degradation in bright lab environments, and all sheets are classified as flame retardant (UL94 V‑2). Every batch is tested for density (0.90–0.91 g/cm³), tensile strength (≥ 25 MPa), and surface hardness (Rockwell R80–95) before fabrication.

Chemical Resistance That Matters

PP worktops are a benchmark for resistance to a broad range of inorganic reagents. They withstand concentrated hydrochloric acid (30%), nitric acid (40%), sodium hydroxide (40%), and most salt solutions without surface etching or weight gain. They are also impervious to common lab solvents like acetone, ethanol, and isopropanol in limited exposure. For heavy organic solvents (e.g., chlorinated hydrocarbons, aromatics), we typically recommend alternative materials—but for 90% of routine wet chemistry and biology labs, PP delivers reliable, long‑term performance.

Construction and Edge Detailing

Unlike thinner plastic laminates, our PP worktops are fabricated from solid sheet—no lamination, no delamination risk. Edges are heat‑welded using identical PP rod material to create a seamless, leak‑proof border. We can produce flush‑welded edges, raised drip lips, or integrated upstands (backsplashes) to contain spills. For sink integration, we thermoform or weld a single‑piece basin directly into the worktop surface—eliminating seams where bacteria or chemical residues can collect. All welded joints are visually inspected and pressure‑tested for integrity.

Structural Support and Load Ratings

While PP is inherently rigid, longer spans require reinforcement to prevent sagging. For worktops up to 1500 mm span, 15 mm thickness provides adequate stiffness. For spans above 2000 mm, we recommend 20 mm or 25 mm thickness, or the addition of underlying steel support channels. We provide span tables with each quote so you can select the right thickness for your equipment weights. Typical load capacity for a 20 mm top is 150 kg evenly distributed over a 1.5 m span.

Customization to Your Layout

Dimensions are fully customizable: lengths up to 3000 mm, widths to 1500 mm, and thicknesses as specified. We machine cutouts for sinks, faucets, gas nozzles, and electrical outlets with CNC‑routed edges for a clean, precise fit. You can also specify integral reagent shelves, sloped drain surfaces (1–2° gradient), or color‑matched PP edging. Our standard color is light grey (RAL 7035), but we offer white, dark grey, and blue upon request.

Applications

PP worktops are specified for:

  • Analytical chemistry labs (wet digestion, acid washing)

  • Pharmaceutical quality control (sample preparation)

  • University teaching laboratories (high‑traffic, cost‑sensitive)

  • Electroplating and metal finishing facilities

  • Environmental testing labs handling wastewater samples

  • Fume hood interiors and work surfaces

They are also a preferred choice for marine and coastal laboratories where salt spray is a concern.

Quality Control and Documentation

Every worktop is inspected for flatness (tolerance ± 1 mm per meter), edge straightness, and surface finish. We provide a material test certificate referencing the specific batch number and chemical resistance data. Shipment is in heavy‑duty cartons with edge protectors and corner braces to prevent transit damage. Installation guidance and cleaning instructions (using mild alkaline cleaners—never abrasive pads) are included with each delivery.
